Flat Lay is a type of still life photo shot top down (Birds Eye View)

Objects are arranged or organized in such a way that the viewer’s eye moves around the composition rather than settling on one focal point

1.Theme  

Flat Lays are based on a theme which can be almost anything.

-Food

-Color

-Hobbie

-Travel

2. Props

Collect 8-12 objects for your flat lay.  You don’t have to use all of them but it is good to have a lot of objects to pick from.

 

3. Background

Choose a surface that adds to you photo (or at least doesn’t distract from it)

-Wood

-dirt

-white or colored paper

-granit

-Newspaper

-Maps

-Material

 

4. Light source

Pick an area where your light is EVENLY distributed.  You do NOT want shadows and uneven light.

 

5. Composition

Arrange your objects thoughtfully and aesthetically.

Remember the use of positive/negative space, shapes, lines and color.

 

  • Even if the objects are random, organizing them in a pleasing way makes for a good image
  • If you do not like how the layout looks, rearrange them in a different way

 

5. Photography

Looking straight down at all of the objects, take your photograph

 

6. Edit

Choose an app to edit your flat lay.  Make sure you crop out any extra areas and fix the exposure and colors.
