How to expand the background area of your image

Step 1:
- Open your image in photoshop

Step 2:
- Go to Image
- Canvas Size
- Make sure you are on INCHES (not pixels)
- Canvas size will show the size of the image

Step 3a:
- To expand the area around your image you will increase the size
- I added 4 inches to both sides for the example. You can make it as big or as small as you need.

Step 3b:
- A box will be created around your image
- The size of the box will depend on how many inches you added to the original image

Step 4:
- Go to
- Rectangular Marquee Tool (below Move tool)

Step 5:
- Draw a box in one of the blank areas around the image

Step 6:
- Right Click in the box area you selected
- Fill

Step 7:
- Go to Contents
- Content-Aware
- Click OK
- The area will now be filled in with your image
- Click OK

Step 8:
- Pick the Rectangular Marquee Tool again
- Draw a box in another blank areas around the image
- Right Click
- Fill
- Contents
- Content-Aware
- Click OK

Step 9:
- Repeat steps 4 – 7 until you have extended the entire image
