Credited with painting one of the first recognized purely abstract works.
God Father of Abstract Painting
Born in Moscow 1866
Started a career as a Law professor but left it to study art
Early 1900’s Kandinsky began to think that painting didn’t need a particular subject, but that shapes and colors alone could be art
He said “the more frightening the world becomes…the more art becomes abstract”.
He believed music was the purest form of art. That music could evoke images in the mind. He saw colors when he heard music. He mostly listened to jazz music.
He believed he could express feelings like in music but through colors and shapes in his paintings.
Example: He thought that yellow had the crisp sound of a brass trumpet and that certain colors placed together could harmonize like chords on a piano.
The Circle was the ideal form of spiritual expression in art
Round forms evokes their universality – from the stars in the cosmos to drops of dew; the circle a shape integral to life
